April 24, 2024 - The City University of New York (CUNY) has introduced a new accessibility policy for students with disabilities, showcasing its dedication to inclusivity and equal access to education. The policy, approved by the Board of Trustees in February, aims to address the needs of over 10,000 CUNY students with disabilities by incorporating inclusion, equity, and accessibility into academic decision-making processes across all 25 campuses.

Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez expressed the university's commitment by stating, "This new accessibility policy is another demonstration of CUNY’s commitment to provide a top-notch education to all students, regardless of background or means."

The policy outlines clear procedures and deadlines for handling requests for academic accommodations, ensuring that students with disabilities have the necessary resources to thrive in their educational pursuits. By going above and beyond the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), CUNY's policy focuses on academic adjustments that promote equal access for students in a university setting.

Lennyn Jacob, a disabilities studies major at CUNY SPS and former chairperson of the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities, praised the new policy, saying, “As a student at CUNY, I am proud that the university has taken steps to put us ahead of the current ADA law." Jacob emphasized the importance of clarity for disabled students, faculty, and staff, stating, "This policy ensures clarity for our disabled student community, who may not know their rights, and the faculty and staff supporting them."

CUNY's Disability Awareness Month celebrations have been ongoing, with events like the CUNY Neurodiversity Conference providing a platform to discuss topics related to neurodiversity and mental health. Looking ahead, the university's annual Accessibility Conference in May will focus on creating a culture of accessibility and inclusion in higher education.

CUNY's commitment to providing quality and affordable education has long been recognized, with the institution serving as a vital component of New York City's social mobility landscape. The introduction of the new accessibility policy underscores CUNY's dedication to ensuring all students have the support they need to succeed, regardless of their background or abilities.
