Three New York University professors, Martín Farach-Colton, Rebecca A. Betensky, and Zhong-Ping Jiang, have been honored as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a prestigious recognition within the scientific community.

Rebecca A. Betensky, a professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the NYU School of Global Public Health, was acknowledged for her significant contributions to statistical methodology and biomedical research, particularly in the areas of survival analysis, clinical trials, and biomarker discovery. Betensky's leadership in promoting diversity in statistics and her work on neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, were highlighted in the recognition.

Martín Farach-Colton, Leonard J. Shustek Professor of Computer Science at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, was recognized for his exceptional work in the theory of data structures and their application in computer systems. His research on big data algorithmics, storage systems, and streaming algorithms has garnered attention, with a recent journal article setting a new standard for hash table efficiency in computer science.

Zhong-Ping Jiang, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, was honored for his groundbreaking contributions to nonlinear small-gain theory and constructive nonlinear control design across various systems. His interdisciplinary research on control and learning, including projects on human sensorimotor learning, automated lane-changing technology, and AI-based traffic signal control systems, was highlighted in his recognition.

Sudip Parikh, the chief executive officer of AAAS, expressed pride in the newly elected Fellows, emphasizing their embodiment of scientific excellence and leadership in advancing scientific achievements.

The 2023 AAAS Fellows, including Betensky, Farach-Colton, and Jiang, will be formally recognized in Washington, D.C., on September 21, 2024, and featured in the journal Science this month. NYU, a renowned research university, continues to excel in various fields of study and research, solidifying its position as a leader in academia and scientific advancement.
